I geeked out a bit upon hearing “Runaways,” the first track from the Killers’ upcoming release Battle Born, a few weeks ago, so you know I didn’t hesitate to click “Play” when the music video for the track was released yesterday. The video has already racked up almost 400,000 views on YouTube, so apparently I wasn’t the only one interested in seeing how the Brandon Flowers-fronted act chose to support this first single visually.

The music video for “Runaways” is much more abstract than I expected, making use of blurred lights and billows of colored smoke as the band performs in a black, space-like abyss. I was a bit surprised by this treatment as the song itself strikes me as very personal and grounded, with a linear, story-telling vibe that actually reminded me of old Tom Petty.
