We were pulling up to my friend Snoopy’s place in Oaktown, near noon or 1pm (don’t quite remember). All I recall was that we were approaching the hour that Eric Prydz tickets would go on sale, and at that moment, everyone in my car was glaring holes into their phones to log-in to Flavorus. The EDMMadness discussion threads had been completely flooded since the announcement of Eric Prydz at the Palladium with questions on whether he’d even make it to the States; videos of his MANY, MANY songs; and in general, just a lot of buzz and excitement. The man hasn’t been able to conquer his fear of flying to tour the States since the last time we had a white president. Trust me when I say that Prydz in town was a huge deal for a lot of people.

“Oh shit,” I thought to myself. I’m gripping the steering wheel too hard. My knuckles were turning white. Were we going to make it to Snoopy’s place in time to get to a computer? Flavorus is usually pretty sucky when you access from a phone.

Jesus Christ, I’ve enjoyed what I’ve heard by the guy, but I only know, like, four of his song titles. Why am I so stressed out about this?

And with that, sandwiched between a weekend at Electric Forest and seeing Carl Cox and DJ Aphrodite at the Opulent Temple SF Massive, we bought MORE tickets to ANOTHER show a month later. We logged in from phone, computer, multiple devices to make sure we had enough tickets to the show. I sat amazed as Willowtree called other friends to get a tally of how many tickets they’d bought and how many we needed. It was like watching a racehorse bookie at work. I sat back with my one pair of tickets, satisfied with my personal victory, all the while wondering why everyone else scuttled around so obsessively to obtain tickets like zombies during the season finale of The Walking Dead.

Fast forward to 3am, Sunday the 15th. I got it. Every bit of it. The hype, the excitement, the anticipation, the passion for this man’s music and presence. Eric Prydz had just closed his set out with an Empire of the Sun mashup loosely ID’d as “We Are the Mirage,” and Arty was beginning to take the stage. After a damn-near-three-hour ride with an impressively heavy listing of his original tunes under multiple monikers, I was in a bit of shock and awe.

Not even the sweltering heat of the Palladium could drive me outside to take a breath of fresh Los Angeles air secondhand smoke. Fuck breathing, I just heard the beautiful piano motif of “Pjanoo.” My throat was pretty dry from being a bit hungover from the weekend, but screw getting a bottle of water. The drop on Cirez D “On Off” was about to hit, and Eric Prydz was telling everyone in the 4,000 person capacity Palladium to sit the fuck down. (Almost) everyone knelt on that nasty beer/cocktail-soaked floor and erupted to their feet in unison when he finally let go of the ridiculous 8 billion year build up.

And that was my biggest take away of this show. I realized just why people spoke so highly of Eric Prydz. As a masterful artist/DJ does, he set out to take everyone on a musical journey with a meticulously picked set list. He directed us to do just as he wanted, not necessarily by asking, but through his mixing.

With no pre-recorded set (at least I hope not), Prydz’s transitions were smooth, complex, and deep. Not satisfied with simply playing track after track, hit after hit, he’d work a song sample into whatever he was playing (“Sweet Dreams” specifically is what I’m referring to), switch it back, and continue to build up complex layers with songs that melted together so well that at some points I didn’t even know what the shit I was listening to anymore. Almost every song felt like it had its place in the set, placed in that spot for a reason, not just thrown in abruptly to get a quick cheap reaction from the crowd.

And that’s what I enjoy the most about good progressive DJs and producers. They understand the big picture, aware that every small intricacy, every synth, every high-hat helps to build on a song, to give that main motif more depth, and when applied to a whole set of songs in a similar manner, the result is absolutely amazing.

But sometimes people find that sort of thing to be too repetitive. Good. More awesome proggy house for the rest of us.
