Some people love the winter holiday season with its double-whammy of food and gifts, but my favorite time of year is most definitely festival season. The combination of music, food, and overall good musical vibes is better than any present that could fit under a fir tree, and this week Guerilla Union’s Rock The Bells 2012 brought us a little Christmas-in-July action with their announcement regarding the final artist additions to the festival’s lineup. These additions include performances by KRS-One, Xzibit, Hieroglyphics, El-P, Killer Mike, Kid Ink, Machine Gun Kelly, Casey Veggies, I Self Devine, Chief Keef, and Slim da Mobster at the San Bernardino, CA festival; Slaughterhouse, French Montana + Red Café, Chief Keef and Tinie Tempah at the Holmdel, New Jersey location; and DMX and EVE at the Mountain View, CA festival, rounding out their appearance at all three dates.
With three performance locations spanning two coasts, Rock the Bells falls somewhere between Coachella and Warped Tour on the festival spectrum, but I say with just a little bit of pride that the festival’s SoCal location is primed to be the best of the three. Referring to San Bernardino’s NOS Events Center, Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union states:
“The Fairgrounds in San Bernardino allows us the room to build an additional stage, versus the amphitheaters in Mountain View and Holmdel where it is not as spaciously possible. Plus, Southern California is our home-court. It’s where Rock the Bells all started. We wanted to do something special for the fans that have supported us from the beginning. The Guerilla Union Stage mixed by DatPiff is our way of saying thank you to our backyard fans that helped catapult Rock the Bells to what it is today, giving us the ability to bring the music and the experience to additional cities, nationally and internationally.”
In addition to the music Rock the Bells participants will hear at the festival itself, DatPiff, an online mixtape provider, and Guerilla Union have recently announced their joint efforts in releasing the first-ever Official Rock the Bells 2012 Mixtape, hosted by DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and Supernatural, a freestyle world-record breaker. Featuring exclusive tracks from participating festival artists — including the first Deltron 3030 single in over 10 years, as well as the first single from RZA’s directorial debut: The Man with the Iron Fists — the mixtape will be available for free download starting next Tuesday, July 24th at Datpiff’s website and should be the perfect thing to get you in the Rock the Bells mindset.
