Gaslight Anthem LEAD

Has a band ever written better music to drive a car to than The Gaslight Anthem? (The obvious answer to this question is “Yes.” The best driving music is and will always be Creedence Clearwater Revival. But there’s no shame in losing to the best.) The New Jersey Americana-punk-folk-rockers will release their 4th album, Handwritten, on July 24, 2012 via Mercury Records but the lead single, “45,” is already available online and makes the perfect summertime anthem for rock & roll types who are preemptively sick of whatever this year’s “California Gurls” turns out to be.

Listen to “45” on SoundCloud.

The Gaslight Anthem has never been shy about wearing their influences on their sleeves. Their 2008 breakthrough, The ’59 Sound, was packed with lyrical allusions to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, Tom Petty and — to the delight of yours truly — Counting Crows, among others. “45” serves up a predictable-enough collage of boys and girls staying up all night, listening to records and falling in and out of love, but The Gaslight Anthem is one of those bands from whom I will happily listen to variations on a theme from now until the end of time. And it would seem that some of their idols feel the same way.

The track list for Handwritten is as follows:

01. 45
02. Handwritten
03. Here Comes My Man
04. Mulholland Drive
05. Keepsake
06. Too Much Blood
07. Howl
08. Biloxi Parish
09. Desire
10. Mae
11. National Anthem

Much to my chagrin, The Gaslight Anthem’s upcoming string of North American headlining dates does not include any LA shows. If you happen to be outside of La La Land during the summer months, however, you might stand a fighting chance of catching them, and in September you can see the band open for Rise Against at the Honda Center.
