Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” (featuring Kimbra) has been a consistent track on my playlist since it came out in July of last year. I was then (and am now) obsessed, cruising with windows down while belting out the lyrics to what my friends and I describe as “the realest break up song” at maximum volume…there’s my summer for you in a nutshell, and I’m not the only one in love with this song; it seems as if the masses unanimously agree. The geometrically inspired and visually eclectic music video has received over 35 million views on YouTube since its release, and the duo even made it on our Top Ten Collaborations of 2011 list.
Now just when I thought I could remove the repeat feature I’ve enabled on my iPod and put the track to rest, a friend sends me this ridiculously unreal cover and my obsession starts up again. Canadian trio Walk Off The Earth has independently weaved its way through the music business. No managers, no booking agents, no publicists…these guys can attribute any and all success to their original musicianship and loyal fan base. Walk Off The Earth’s cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” was just released on the 5th of January and has already revved up over 4 million hits. Needless to say, these guys hit the nail dead smack on the head with this cover!
At the very least, the video itself can be described as impressive. I’m not sure what to focus in on first; it all kind of catches your eyes and ears at different moments throughout the recording. At first maybe you’ll notice that five people (an added two contributors to Walk Off The Earth’s three-man band) are strumming on the same guitar. Then maybe you’ll zone in on the guy on the far left using the guitar’s base as sort of an acoustic drum. By then you’ll realize that all of the participants have gorgeous voices, especially the two guy soloists and the woman who sings Kimbra’s verse. Lastly, at the video’s end you might take a moment to reflect on how effortless they made it all look and sound. You’ll think “Wow, that was gorgeous,” and then you’ll undoubtedly click the repeat button!
