It’s been everywhere – your girlfriend’s Twitter, your uncle’s Facebook, your cat’s blog – but in case you’ve been living under a rock the past two weeks, check out The Queen Extravaganza front runner Marc Martel’s version of the group’s classic, “Somebody to Love.”
So you have seen it…I guess that’s why it qualifies as a viral video at almost 4 million YouTube hits and counting. What you may not know is the story behind it.
In mid-September, Queen’s legendary rock drummer, Roger Taylor, announced the Queen Extravaganza contest. His plan? To comb the North American inter-webs for musicians and vocalists, ultimately choosing a five person band and three lead vocalists to promote Queen’s legacy in a North American tour set to take off in 2012 as part of Queen’s 40th anniversary celebration.
The clock is already ticking on submissions, and contestants will have to get their best Freddie Mercury impersonations, genius Brian May guitar solos, and gratuitous Roger Taylor drum fills polished and ready before November 7, 2011 in order to be considered. For the remainder of the musically uninclined population, all we have to do is sit back and enjoy as thousands of hopefuls put their dreams on the line.
