Back in June, when the initial dates for Opeth and Katatonia’s North American trek were revealed, I could barely contain my excitement to witness the two acts under one roof. Both bands have been hugely influential throughout my musical journey, with the culmination of Opeth’s importance played out through one of two stateside shows on their Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology tour last year. And while I have had the opportunity to catch Katatonia live on more than one occasion, the prospect of seeing them in a more refined setting has left me counting down the days until their stop at the Mayan Theatre.

Well, the wait is finally over, and tonight is the night for LA’s progressive metal fans. While Opeth is touting Heritage, their tenth studio album, Katatonia is supporting Night is the New Day and The Longest Year EP, released in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Additionally, Katatonia is currently celebrating their 20th anniversary and will follow up their remaining dates with Opeth with a stint through Spain, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. Each of these shows will feature two sets: the first, with a full performance of Last Fair Deal Gone Down; and the second, a mixed set of carefully picked songs from the band’s extensive catalogue. In their entirety, the shows will be well over two and a half hours of live music.

Coupled with these performances, Katatonia has revealed pre-order details for the limited-edition reissue of their 1994 rare mini-album, For Funerals to Come. Available on vinyl on November 7th (CD TBA) through Peaceville Records, this new edition contains 2 bonus tracks, “Black Erotica” and “Love of the Swan,” and features new liner notes from co-founding member, writer, and guitarist, Anders Nyström.

While tonight’s show is expected to sell out, tickets are currently still available through the Mayan Theatre TicketWeb. Don’t miss your chance to catch two of Sweden’s most influential offerings on one bill!
