Dropping August 23rd

For those of you who unfamiliar with the underground emcee Apathy, it’s about damn time you familiarize yourself. This guy makes your favorite rapper seem like a hormonal, 13-year old closet recording amateur. Let’s just say there’s no comparison. Severely complicated rhyme schemes, intricate and creative lyrics, strong punch lines, a powerful presence, and a solid flow…these are just a few accurate descriptions of what Apathy brings to the table of hip-hop.

Apathy will be releasing his 3rd solo album titled Honkey Kong on August 23rd, and there is no doubt in my mind this will be his 3rd project that receives much critical praise. Just simply listen to the first verse on the intro of the album to hear his hip-hop prowess and dexterity. As he has always done in the past, he delivers a screamingly unique sound combined with such a hype and loud style throughout the album; it undoubtedly leaves the listener satisfied. While the main theme of the project is Ap’s monstrous and gorilla-like presence on the mic–hence the title of the record, Honkey Kong–the album also goes beyond his typical battle rap motif, as Apathy explores more serious matters such as financial issues, fan tribulations, and his love life.

Apathy - Honkey Kong drops August 23

The album features appearances from Xzibit, Celph Titled, Vinnie Paz, Ill Bill, Esoteric, and much more. Along with that list of underground titans comes the collection of nasty producers who also contributed to the album, such as DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, Evidence, Statik Selektah, Da Beatminerz, and Apathy himself. Now if you fancy yourself a hip-hop fan, you probably noticed there’s a producer’s name mentioned above that is arguably the best producer to ever chop a sample in hip-hop history, and Apathy would certainly agree with that statement. As he explained, “Working with DJ Premier is personally the most important point in my career. That’s my favorite producer of all time, hands down.” The Preemo-produced lead single “Stop What Ya Doin” f/Celph Titled will be released any day now, and it’s definitely one of the hardest bangers on the album.

The single “Check to Check,” produced by Evidence, has already been released and has received well-deserved hype across the blogosphere. It’s made many cultured hip-hop fans anxious to hear Apathy’s next single and certainly beyond anxious for the drop date of August 23rd. The album is hardcore and definitely bangs, and that’s exactly what Apathy had in mind when approaching this one. He stated, “When I started to make Honkey Kong, I knew I wanted to make a hardcore, classic hip-hop album. I grew up listening to Gang Starr, Wu-Tang, EPMD and so on, so when this album started coming together, and I started working with dudes who I grew up studying and idolizing, like Preem, Muggs, Beatminerz, Steele, Mad Lion, that made all the bullshit of the industry worth it to me.” So sit tight until the 23rd, then grab yourself a copy of Apathy’s highly anticipated 3rd solo album Honkey Kong. You won’t regret it.
