If you’re like me, you tend to wait until the very last minute to make plans with your friends. Even then, you may stand around in a group saying, “Where should we go tonight?” “I dunno, what sounds cool?” “I don’t know, man, anything.” “Well, we have to figure out something.” Etc. etc. This usually ends with everyone heading back to someone’s apartment, eating pizza, and drinking PBR. Again.
Instead of going through that dialogue for the bajillionth time, I give you a cheap and awesome way to spend your Monday night.
The Jezabels, a quartet from down undah, would like to make you dance. These ladies and gents, like so many of my other personal favorite bands, cannot be placed into a single genre. They describe their sound as “intensindie” – a dance/indie/pop/rock mutt of awesomeness. Fans of Arcade Fire (and really, who isn’t nowadays?) will dig on Nik Kaloper’s drum style, and frontlady Hayley Mary’s voice evokes a Karen O.-esque quality while still being singularly unique. They’re already huge hits in Australia, having played at tons of festivals and having their singles featured on iTunes.
Tonight the group will be shakin’ The Viper Room at 8:00. Tickets are only $5, so even I can afford to hit up this one. If you can’t make it out, or actually have other things to do, no worries – they’ll be back in the fall for a full-blown US tour after making sure the rest of the world knows who they are. Their first full-length album will be released this September, so at least hit your local Borders independent music store to grab your copy.
