I was sitting in my car next to a No Parking sign, patiently waiting for my hubby to return with my Panera salad when I heard it on the radio: “New music from Blink 182.” Instant twist of the volume dial as I closed whatever browser had previously held my attention on my Blackberry. It’d been over 6 years since the trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge, and Travis Barker had recorded new music together, and I wasn’t about to miss a second of the new track, “Up All Night.”
It started a bit heavier and grittier than I expected, and I could instantly hear the influence of the members’ solo efforts (vocal effects reminiscent of Angels and Airwaves, a smattering of electronic production in with the expected punk rock). Like my favorite Blink tracks, lead vocals were shared by Hoppus and Delonge and the hook was as catchy as syphilis during shore leave. While all three artists have found continued success since Blink 182 went on hiatus back in 2005, there’s something special that happens when they head into the studio together, and “Up All Night” is no exception.
On September 27th, Blink 182 will release their sixth studio album, Neighborhoods, and on October 8 they’ll be hitting the Hollywood Bowl in LA along with My Chemical Romance and Matt and Kim as part of the Honda Civic Tour…but you probably already knew all that.
