Ain’t no party like a Matt and Kim party!! The dynamic duo played an AMAZING show Friday night at the Music Box in the Henry Fonda Theater! They rocked so hard the Music Box actually moved 4 inches to the left of its original foundation! Opening up for the duo was The Thermals, who were supremely awesome as well and contributed 2 of those 4 inches of extreme gyration. Even the DJ killed it! This was my first time seeing Matt and Kim live, and I figured it was going to be fun, but I didn’t know it was going to be like riding-rollercoasters-at-Six-Flags fun or like, ya know, swimming-with-dolphins fun, but it was!!

Here’s the DJ doing his thing. He played a sh*t ton of great songs. Old school hip-hop, west coast gangsta rap, the hottest dance and house music, and even my favorite fist pumpin’ guido song “We No Speak Americano” (yup, I’ll cop to liking that…a lot).

Next The Thermals came out to get the crowd in a further frenzy in anticipation on Matt and Kim. They flipped the crowd out with their high energy, indie punk songs.

Leader of the pack, Hutch Harris:

Hutch Harris started The Thermals back in 2002 when he went into his high tech studio (AKA his kitchen) and performed and recorded their first album, More Parts Per Million, on a 4-track cassette tape, playing all instruments himself. From thence came The Thermals!

The Thermals are a Portland band, but originally bass player Kathy Foster was a native of Sunnyvale, California, which begs the question: is that at all near Sunnydale where Buffy lives??

P.S. Her bouncy hair is the crème de la crème of bouncy hairdos.

Here’s Westin Glass on drums.

You know how sometimes there’s like this one tiny part of a song that just totally makes you happy for no apparent reason? Well Westin has this little cymbal drum lick in “Never Listen to Me” that for some odd reason makes me love the song so much more. You know what I’m saying? Does anyone else have a weird bleep or noise or maybe a tiny riff in a song that just does it for them?

Once The Thermals got everyone’s blood pumping, Matt and Kim wasted no time taking to the stage! Their stage set up was quick, and they came out LITERALLY leaping and bounding across the stage as the crowd exploded with joy. I kept trying to take a picture, but they were jumping around in such a frenzy I had like a snowball’s chance in hell of getting a shot that wasn’t a complete blur. (I wouldn’t have it any other way though!)

From there, the energy of the show just mounted and mounted. The crowd was like manic with joy, and Matt and Kim stirred the mayhem with glee. They threw HUNDREDS of balloons into the crowd and MASS amounts of colorful confetti. They implored all the males in the audience to take off their shirts and whip them above their heads (so, as Kim put it, the girls could get a hot view of what goods were on sale that night!), and there was lots of booty humpin’ and shaking going on (mostly by Kim!!). Plus non-stop crowd surfing that Kim took part in by actually walking ON TOP of the crowd via everyone’s outstretched hands where, of course, she graced everyone with another hilarious humpty dance! They played all their best songs, plus cool covers like Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend,” and through it all, Matt and Kim smiled with all their freakin’ might and made us all laugh and dance and rock out in a way that was pure, unpretentious fun!

Here are some of the pictures I managed to capture:

Early into the show Kim declared that there was a drinking game going on. Everyone had to take a drink whenever Matt swept his hair off his face. I think by the time this picture caught him in the act, everyone playing that game was drunker than my Aunt Marlene sippin’ solo on her own box of Carlo Rossi:

And here’s the rest of The Thermals photos:

What a great show! The Thermals and Matt and Kim both declared that we were the best audience of the tour thus far! Way to go Los Angeles!!
