The summer festival season is upon us, and while some metal fans choose to spend their time within the confines of their favorite air conditioned venues, others have the opportunity to enjoy some amazing outdoor events throughout the coming months. One-off gigs, such as The Power of the Riff Festival, are scattered throughout the season, but it’s this summer’s traveling packages that are sure to feed your fix.

We’ve rounded up the most prominent stateside metal festivals happening this summer. From mainstream metal to the underground heavyweights, LA Music Blog has your guide to this season’s metal main events.

This summer marks the fourth installment of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and while several main stage acts seem somewhat outdated, the rest of the lineup makes the trek worthwhile. This year’s festivities kick off on July 9th at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernadino, and for this show only, Dethklok will perform in the place of Megadeth, and Testament in place of In Flames. The Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival returns, once again, with Avenged Sevenfold as the headliners. The seven-week stint will hit cities nationwide from August 26th through October 15th, with a portion of all proceeds benefiting Child Find of America and the Road 2 Recovery Foundation. While an LA date has yet to be announced, the festival will be hitting San Diego on October 9th–it’s safe to bet that we’ll be seeing it sometime around then. Regarded as “The Most Extreme Tour of the Year,” the 2011 Summer Slaughter Tour features the heaviest and most vehement lineup of the summer. A few months back, Summer Slaughter was having a poll to determine who the opening band would be on the tour, with Within the Ruins securing the spot. Now, many of the remaining nominees have come together for their own run, dubbed the Summer Slaughter Survivors Tour, featuring a handful of up-and-comers alongside Sacramento’s Conducting From the Grave. The tour begins with a kick-off party in Hollywood at the Key Club on July 21st.

Atlanta metallers Norma Jean have been revealed as the headliners on the 2011 Scream the Prayer tour. The festival, which features a lineup comprised entirely of christian bands, kicks off in Nashville, and will run throughout the entire month of July.
