The Antlers LEAD

With the success of New York’s The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeah, and Interpol and indie rock bands like The Bravery and The Walkmen. The Antlers are in a great position to rise to the top of an increasingly popular scene thanks to their obscure lullabies and creative arrangements.
Boasting a style similar to that of Passion Pit and LCD Soundsystem, the band—comprised of Peter Silberman (vocals, guitar, harmonica, harp, accordion, keyboards), Michael Lerner (drums), and Darby Cicci (keyboards, trumpet, bowed banjo)—sounds like something out of a surreal dream.

Burst Apart, the Antler’s follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2009 release, Hospice, came out on May 10. The opening track “I Don’t Want Love” is so soothing at times that you forget to listen to the lyrics and simply float along with the hazy tune. The album seems to be just drifting along when a couple of songs in, “No Windows” marks a distinct uplifting change, along with the pick-me-ups throughout of “Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out” and “Tiptoe.”

Overall, the album strikes a perfect balance between the two styles, and as a mentioned before, it’s very much like a dream: you will distinctly notice some parts on the first listen and others you might not remember until later. Layers upon layers of synch make this possible, like stimulated lucid dreaming via constant ins and outs of audio consciousness.

Make sure to check out the Antlers when they play El Rey in Los Angeles June 3!
