Holy DUCK has it been a crazy few months for us at LA Music Blog. The winter is melting away, spring is slowly but steadily visiting more often on oddly hot days, and eventually summer will be here with the familiar feeling of mugginess and of course some exciting new EDM tunes to usher in a summer season of music, festivals, and sweltering heat.
Right along the current we have recently reunified DJ/Producer duo, Gabriel & Dresden, who we had the pleasure of interviewing before they played their comeback show at the Hollywood Palladium this past New Years Eve at GIANT: New Years Eve. We were lucky enough to sit down and chat with them as they prepared for their set during the Above and Beyond Anjunabeats party in Miami!

As always, the guys were extremely cool and happy to share some updates, tidbits, and some new info with us!
Very nice to meet you guys finally. Just wanted to catch up since we last spoke. How have things been since the reunion?
Both: Good.
Dave: I think Josh and I didn’t really know what to expect from each other before New Years. I think we were both comforted to know that we still had chemistry in the DJ booth and with music. That’s why we’ve continued to do this. We recognize we just have some things to say.
Things to say?
Josh: He just means we have music to be made.
Dave: DJ gigs to be had. Peoples’ hands up in the air, etc.
When’s the last time you guys played Miami?
Dave: Two weeks ago at Winter Music Conference.
How about prior to that?
Dave: This is actually where we ceased operations. Did a show at the Beatport pool party.
Are you guys playing anywhere other than that Anjunabeats party?
Josh: Nope, just this one.
Anything particular about this one to make you want to play it?
Josh: They’ve been big supporters of us over the years, and I played one a couple of years ago by myself and it was a great party. I said, “We have to play it together,” and Dave said, “Let’s do it.”
What’s next for you guys after you play tonight?
Josh: I’m going back to Amsterdam, Dave is going to go back home, and then in April we’re going to get together in Amsterdam and make some music. Then we’re going to tour Australia for ten days.
Any particular reason Australia?
Josh: To tour for Creamfields.
When you guys get together in the studio in April, what’s that going to look like? Any ideas on what tracks to put out?
Dave: We’re starting to talk about ideas for what that’s going to be. We have a remix to do of the new Andain song, which we’ve started and have come close to finishing.
Josh: We’re usually pretty open-minded and see where it goes.
Dave: Today we had no idea what we were going to do for our DJ set tonight, but within an hour we had two new ideas. Things just kinda happen between us.
[Points to computers in the room] I see you guys have your stuff set up.
Dave: We got both sequencers working in overdrive.
Josh: We’re just making stuff for tonight. Mashups and things like that.
Dave: We like to personalize pretty much everything we play at some point or another.
When did you guys start hand-picking the songs?
Josh: Since New Years we’ve been listening to new stuff, and we’ve been taking older things and re-working them.
What shows have you played together since New Years?
Dave: We did two shows in early March in San Francisco and Washington D.C., Ruby Skye and Glow. They were both really good shows. Then we came here to do a Shine gig, then Texas for South by Southwest. All of them have been great. Some better than others, but fans are coming out and checking us out again. A lot of old faces, new faces, people who have never heard of us live.
So how about Miami? Is it one of your top places to play?
Josh: Miami has the Winter Music Conference, and most of the DJs play here. It’s a great place to play. For us we prefer a more personal experience. We like to go into the city and having a longer night with a crowd.
Was it weird that this year WMC was different from Ultra?
Josh: I don’t think it was that weird. This week really seems to be unique to the last. The other week there was just something else going on. It was more like Spring Break.
For each of you, any particular song that will make it into tonight’s set?
Dave: Probably what we just made, which is a bootleg of Matt Zo’s “Synapse Dynamics Arty Remix” with our song “Let Go,” which was on our debut album. So we’ll definitely play that and probably play some version of “Tracking Treasure Down” and “As the Rush Comes.” Apart from that, it’s really anybody’s guess what we’ll be playing.
So when do you fly back out to Amsterdam? Are you going to stay out all night to party?
Josh: No no no [laughs], I fly out tomorrow. I’m going back home to watch the kids. Need to get some sleep [laughs].
Have you guys been in Miami this whole time?
Josh: Nope, we were in Texas.
Dave: I actually went back to California for a little bit. SF has been dreadful lately. Ever since I got back from Texas, it’s been all rain.
What part of SF do you live in Dave?
Dave: Oakland. Oak-town [raises arms]
[Laughs]Okay, well, I know you guys are really busy, but we just wanted to come by and say hi. Can’t wait for the show tonight. It might be kind of cheesy, but could you guys give a quick shout out to LA Music Blog?
*Unfortunately the audio in our video was a little hard to pick up, but super conveniently (lol) the shout out came out just fine. Just press play*
With another chance to talk to these two amazing guys, we’ve been able to get some new info on just what’s coming next for them. Looks like there will be some much anticipated appearances and music projects on the horizon, and we absolutely can’t wait to follow their progress. Much thanks to them for being super cool, extremely laid back, and for being a huge part of our amazing weekend at UMF Miami!
