Swedish progressive metal band Opeth have spent the better part of 2010 celebrating their 20th anniversary on the road, with an LA stop in April that we were lucky enough to attend. As part of the band’s ongoing commemoration, they have announced the release of a recent live performance from their “Evolution XX: An Opeth Anthology” Tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Aptly titled, In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, the outing is set for a September 21st release through Roadrunner Records.

Frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt confessed, “Opeth had a magical night playing the Royal Albert Hall. It was a dream come true, and now afterwards, it still feels like a dream. We got it all on film, and this, our third live recording and DVD, might be my personal favorite.”

The DVD’s live performance footage was recorded on April 5th and includes the band’s special two-part set that was exclusory to the six-date tour. Performing their breakthrough epic, Blackwater Park, album in its entirety, the band followed course with a collection of chronologically arranged songs that spanned their entire discography. In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall’s cover artwork conceptually plays tribute to Deep Purple’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra, showcasing the inherent homage to their progressive rock roots.

According to Åkerfeldt, “…this night of celebration brings me fond memories of our 20th anniversary–this package is the delayed birthday present.”
