Levi/Werstler, the instrumental side project of Dååth guitarists Eyal Levi and Emil Werstler, is a solid testament to the prodigious musicianship of this Atlanta-based duo. While their work with Dååth lends way to a more intricate death metal sound, it is oftentimes lacking in the shredding department; what they’ve created with Avalanche of Worms is a dynamic and extremely technical guitar album that captivates from start to finish.

Avalanche of Worms hits hard from the get-go, with opening track “Noxious Vermin, My Friend” pummeling through with fervid solo work atop thick rhythm riffs. Immediately, the influence of classical music is apparent, as the song arrangement journeys through key and tempo changes and even highlights cross-rhythm throughout. The production value is somewhat gritty, though undoubtedly intentional, and veritably adds to the album’s overall allure.
Songs like “Casting the Molten Sea” and “Loathsome Little Fiend” highlight Emil Werstler’s remarkable shredding abilities, while emphasizing structure and melody in all respects. The composition work of Eyal Levi is impressive, to say the least, and his riffing surpasses most heavy rhythmists entirely.
The inclusion of Cynic drummer Sean Reinert, as well as bassist Kevin Scott and keyboardist Eric Guenther, offers the perfect accompaniment for this outstanding instrumental opus. While it’s obvious that the album will appeal to Dååth fans, Avalanche of Worms transcends genres and invites listeners from a broader spectrum to enjoy this duo’s unique brand of heavy metal.
