“Music, Art, Activism” – These words make up the logo of Forecastle and for good reason. It’s really a rare thing for a music festival to be about far more than music, but that is just what Forecastle aims to do. While only 8 years have passed since its debut, Forecastle has grown exponentially due to founder JK McKnight’s efforts to bring together art exhibits, live music, and activism.

Marvelously, this doesn’t seem to alienate the attendees or cause any significant social friction. So what is the impact of these three elements being merged together? I think the words quoted from a member of Mucca Pazza sums it up best: “I learned how to make my house 60% more energy efficient.” The members then went on to rave and rave about the festival, including a remark about how the people at the festival were some of the nicest in the country. Needless to say, the 9th annual Forecastle festival this July will have a lot to live up to.
