Don’t let the name fool you; Hockey isn’t playing any games on their hipster, heightened new wave album, Mind Chaos. Hockey is making shots and taking names!
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Hockey has been making revival pop waves where grunge rock has usually taken the market, yet it comes as no surprise. With the release of their homemade EP, Mind Chaos, Hockey tempted the ears of talent execs at Capitol Records. Soon after, the group was signed, and their once simple music dream went into overtime. Comprised of Brian White, Jeremy Reynolds, Anthony Stassi, and frontman, Benjamin Grubin, Hockey carries such a charisma on stage that one forgets they’re watching a performance rather quickly. Hockey, honestly put, is a lifestyle of music.
I stumbled across the group during summer 2009 and instantly fell in love with their first single, “Learn To Lose.” A collage of techno beats, glittery riffs, and a voice reminiscent of classic Jon Bon Jovi, “Learn To Lose” offers a sick beat for all tastes of music, and their latest hit, “Song Away,” an upbeat homage to the power of musical renewal, was recently released with great success.
Like the Strokes, Hockey presents the perfect fusion of pop and rock with each track on their album. They are a simply sweet and unstoppable group of musicians, and whether you love them for their rhythm or their kitschy style, Hockey is a pleasure for one and all.
