The Constellations’ special mix of hip-hop, synth-pop, and downright-soulful Southern rock was a fantastic way for the Pure Volume House party to wind down Friday evening. From the moment frontman Elijah Jones took the mic, the crowd was at full attention, and the Atlanta-based super-group’s synth-powered, bohemian hip-rock had all in attendance eating from their music-filled hands.

Sure, it was late as hell and most audience members were quite drunk by this point of the night, but the Southern soul-rock beat accentuated by the band’s driving synth lines caused a wave of movement throughout the crowd. I noticed just as many heads shaking to the beat of Elijah’s rhymes as were bopping to the music’s rhythm. The free-flowing lyrics he spouts forth border on hip-hop, treading that fine line between rock and rhyme much the way Sublime did, but not in imitation, mind you. Sure, there are comparable artists, but the Constellations somehow make it all feel new.

Atlanta is and has been well aware of The Constellations and their mixed blend of styles for a while. It’s now time for the rest of us to pay attention, and this attention is well deserved.
