Billy Bragg used quite a large portion of his set at the MWTX Festival North Stage standing on his typically high political soapbox, but luckily, he played a few songs too.

Don’t get me wrong. I truly enjoy his music and agree with the vaste majority of his stances on politics, and his music’s purpose has always been heavily derived from classic musical/political patriots such as Woody Guthrie, but when I come to a concert, I come for music. Maybe music with a message, but music nonetheless.

When he did play, Billy’s special blend of political folk rock commanded the crowd and their consciences. The music was great and had clear, concise messages without the “clever” lyrical masking some artists use to present a political or social statement without clearly stating it. The lack of “clever” lyrics has always been one of Billy’s strongest points, showing he has no fear of retribution for the views he presents with his music.

In all, the music was great, though it sadly only accounted for about 60% of his set. Billy, sing us your message, please. It’s what you’ve always been best at.
