Let me begin by saying that, honestly, Bad Rabbits @ Aces Lounge was an extremely last minute addition to my SXSW show schedule. At a friend’s urging that I absolutely must see them perform, I decided to pop in and check them out and, damn, am I glad I did.

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a band that immediately grabbed me by the soul and funked it. Before the end of the first song, I already wanted to buy their album, and for me, that is very rare. It’s almost as if Michael Jackson, Pharrell Williams, and Prince had some ridiculous three-way band love-child resulting in the birth of a sound that’s familiar yet dripping with authenticity.
Their sound was infectious. The funk rock backing mixed with singer Dua Boakye’s soulful verses and falsetto hooks plunged myself and the packed house into an undulating soul-rock groove we could not escape. Throwing in the occasional two-step slides harkening back to the Temptations and ending the set with a mic drop akin to Sexual Chocolate, they left me wanting more, much more. I just may have to rearrange my SXSW schedule to fit in another one of their shows if I can, and I highly recommend anyone in town for the events check them out.

Thanks for the review James. It made me want to check them out & give them a listen. Went to their myspace page & previewed some of their music. Thanks for turning me on to a great sound!

[...] Bad Rabbits first caught the attention of LA Music Blog all the way over in the Lone Star State, and we haven’t stopped listening to their unique blend of Pop/R & B/[insert genre here] since. The group recently released (for free!!) their new EP, Stick Up Kids, and just finished up their most recent tour, but rather than allow the band to take a much-deserved breather, we decided to bombard them with a series of hard-hitting questions! Actually we just asked guitarist Salim Akram about the band’s unique sound, the motivation behind releasing the EP for free, and whether there is a full-length album in the works, and he was kind enough to answer us—no bombarding necessary.
