Ask a Phish fan or Deadhead their favorite album and the answer will likely be accompanied by a (hazy) recounting of a cherished concert experience. Some artists are just meant to be experienced live, and V.V. Brown is such an artist. While the Brit doesn’t have legions of fan trailing her on tours (yet), she has made quite the impression on the music industry as evidenced by the number of bodies packed into the swank Bardot nightclub Monday night. They were all there to see her, and she was a sight to be seen.

Attired in a feathered masquerade mask, skin tight bodysuit, and bare feet, Brown performed a set of pop songs that drew from more influences than can be listed, channeling the Caribbean one minute (“Crying Blood”) and outer space the next (the Einstein-inspired “Back in Time”). She banged gongs, wielded a megaphone, and even danced under a parasol to her uber-catchy single “Shark in the Water,” all without crossing the fine line between innovative and gimmicky. Her spectacular voice was even better live than recorded, and nary a song was performed that I couldn’t see playing on the radio.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention that the 40-minute set was plenty long enough for me to develop a bit of a girl-crush on the 5’11” Brit. Besides being model gorgeous (Literally. She’s been in Vogue.) and multi-talented (she sings, writes, produces, plays multiple instruments, has a fashion line, and is working on a graphic novel), Brown’s between-song banter revealed a down-to-earth young woman who was quick to engage the audience with talk of “dickhead” ex-boyfriends and YouTubing while on the toilet, all told in that adorable British accent. Anyone interested in following her around for a few dates when she finally announces a full US tour? I promise it’s not stalking if we just go to the shows, and if they’re anything like the one I saw Monday, you won’t regret spending the money on gas.

I had the chance to see VV Brown playing at Koko (London) on January/09.
It was like a blind shot, because I had never listened to her songs before. A friend of mine recommended her and since I was there to see Lady Gaga I took the time to also see VV’s performance.
I can only say that since that night I am completely addicted to her music. She will be huge.
