As viewers of American Idol, we’re all guest judges in a way, aren’t we? Sure, we might not all don cocktail dresses, set our Coke glasses in front of us (mindful to have their logos facing forward), and have imaginary conversations with imaginary Kara and imaginary Simon (not that I, um, do that), but when each contestant appears on that screen, we’re all making a judgment, be it yes, no, or “seventy-four thousand, one hundred and eighteen bazillion percent yes,” if you’re in a Randy kind of mood. And are we really qualified for the position? In the majority of cases, no. Most of us have no experience with the recording industry other than as consumers, and yet we sit in judgment every week, shoveling Doritos and trying to keep our damn fake eyelashes glued on long enough to make it to nine o’ clock. (Again, I don’t speak from personal experience. I swear.)
