You know how some bands walk on stage and you wonder how the members ever met, let alone began playing music together? Elyse and the Aftermath is a band that looks like they should be a band. When they walked on stage the five-piece sported nothing but black and denim, and the cohesion of their look was only a precursor to the tightness they would exhibit as musicians. With a voice similar in tone to Gwen Stefani’s if the No Doubt songstress preferred rock to ska, frontwoman Elyse Haren has assembled a group of musicians that are all going in the same direction, and that direction is up.

While the show at Molly Malone’s Thursday night was not the largest crowd the group has performed for (that would likely be the audience when they opened for Terri Nunn and Berlin or perhaps one of their five SXSW shows this past spring), the group put on a performance like they were playing for a packed stadium. Elyse’s soaring vocals and introspective lyrics engaged an enthusiastic crowd that would shout back responses during the between-song banter. “Damaged” and “One Photograph” were two of the group’s catchiest tracks, and “Break My Heart Slowly” is relatable to anyone who’s ever experienced one of those agonizingly slow break-ups (and really, who hasn’t?). The group finished out the show with “The Ones Who Never Talk,” the first single from their upcoming album The Aftermath, which will be available in Best Buy stores this fall. Mark Needham, who has worked with The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and Green Day, is mixing this album, and if his choice of previous clients is any indication of Elyse and the Aftermath’s chance of success, we’ll be hearing more about them real soon.
