Jess Furman, Standing on Your Last Line

If you’re from that other, less-sunny entertainment capital of the U.S., New York City, there’s a good chance you’ve heard singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist/forward-slash collector Jess Furman before. If you’ve ever watched an episode of MySpace Music’s BFF, then you have definitely heard her (her track “Count on Me” is the game show’s theme song). Furman currently divides her time between the two coasts, and although she’s relatively new to the L.A. scene, her full-length album Standing on Your Last Line is quickly getting her noticed ‘round these parts.

Furman’s voice, raspy, yet smoothly soulful, is the core of the album and there’s no better word to describe her lyrics than honest (unless she’s making it all up, in which case, she fooled me). Her vocals are paired with instrumentation that’s anything but typical. Want to be able to tell your mom you heard a flugelhorn today? Give track 6, “Outside,” a listen. The only thing this blogger would change about the album is its length. At 8 tracks and just under 30 minutes, you need to listen to Standing on Your Last Line twice through to get a satisfactory fix of this young talent. Here’s hoping the work she’s doing in NYC makes it into my iTunes sooner rather than later.
